"CB" is an acronym for citizens band, a form of radio communication in the days before cell phones that was extremely popular and is still used by a lot of people.

A CB radio comes with a 40 channel selection that's inside the 27-Mhz or 11m band. CB radios are a system of radios used by individuals within a short distance to be able to communicate with others. A license is not normally required to operate a CB, so they are available for both individuals and businesses to use. Due to the fact that only one person can talk at a time, operators wait for their turn to broadcast, and everyone else just listens in.

CB radio was first introduced in the United States during 1945 and used for personal communications. There were only two classes, A and B, for CB radios. Back in the 1970s when the oil crisis occurred occurred in the United States, the government raised the speed limits to 55 mph and fuel was in short supply. CB radios were often used to find out which stations had gasoline available. They also came into wide use when drivers let each other know where speed traps were set up.

One way to describe CB radio channels is to think of them as a type of primitive internet chat rooms...people were able to talk and get acquainted with each other, but still had a relatively anonymous way of communicating.

The CB radio has been a part of many shows on TV and in movies, and is important part of the US culture. In its day, the CB radio was actually considered the best two way radio any individual could get hold of.

Today the CB radio and amplifiers have become more like a hobby in the US, and are mostly used by long-haul semi-truck drivers across the nation. Truckers are great about using the CB radio to give directions or let people know about traffic delays. Today you can purchase a CB radio at most of the electronic retail stores, or even on the internet.
